STAYNER - Clearview Township Mayor Ken Ferguson will join several other snowmobilers in the region at Snowarama for Easter Seals Kids on Saturday.
The event, a fundraiser for Easter Seals, involves snowmobilers collecting pledges and then going for a ride.
For the second year in a row, Ferguson, a die-hard sledder, is hosting a Mayor’s Run.
He said the mayors of all neighbouring municipalities have been invited to take part.
The money that’s raised through Snowarama allows Easter Seals to help physically disabled children by providing them with funds to purchase mobility devices such as wheelchairs.
Ferguson said all of the money that’s raised locally stays in the community.
“That’s something I really like,” he said. “We’re helping our neighbours, our friends.”
Ferguson said that last year the event raised roughly $9,000. The goal for this year’s Snowarama participants is to beat what was raised in 2009.
The Snowarama fundraiser takes place in locations across the province each year.
Whipper Billy Watson, a famous Canadian wrestler from the 1940s to the 1970s, founded the event in 1975.
Riders taking part in the event Saturday will travel across trails that are maintained by the Blue Mountain Snowdrifters, the local chapter of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs.
The Snowdrifters, in conjunction with the Collingwood Progress Club, are the presenters of the local event.
The local event is based at a parking lot off Nottawasaga Sideroad 33/34.
Participants can begin registering at 9 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11 a.m.
Ferguson’s caravan of municipal officials will depart for their ride shortly after 11 a.m.
Pledge forms are available on the Easter Seals’ website at www.easterseals.org.
People wanting to sponsor Mayor Ken Ferguson can do so by calling him at 445-8714 or by contacting the municipal office at 428-6230.
