Clearview Township’s recreation and culture programmer, Jacqueline Soczka, gives Fred The Potato Head a pretend push. Fred is a mascot for the Clearview Health and Leisure Showcase, which includes the Great Couch Potato Race, on Feb. 27 at the Stayner Community Centre.

STAYNER - Pull out your calendar and mark down the Clearview Health and Leisure Showcase on Feb. 27.
Organized by the township, the second annual event will feature an array of health and leisure providers in and around the municipality.
“We’re trying to get everyone in a room so it’s easy for parents, anyone, to see what Clearview has to offer,” said the township’s recreation and culture programmer, Jacqueline Soczka, when talking about the event last week. “It’s about connecting the public with what’s out in the community.”
The showcase will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stayner Community Centre at 269 Regina St.
“Last year we had over 400 people through the door and 55 groups represented,” Soczka said.
This year, so far, 35 groups have signed up to be a part of the day.
“We’ve got Stayner Massage Therapy, Creemore Chiropractic, the Stayner Lions Club, the Collingwood Rowing Club, Collingwood Martial Arts – all kinds of groups offering great opportunities,” she said. “There’s the Mad and Noisy Gallery from Creemore, Stayner Physiotherapy and the Clearview Public Library.”
Organizers are hoping to get more leisure organizations to take part in the day.
“Soccer, baseball, hockey – those types of groups,” she added.
The deadline to register for the showcase is Feb. 12. Soczka noted there are 45 booths available this year.
A special event that’s lined up for the day is the second annual Great Couch Potato Race.
The race will involve Clearview Township staff competing against each other.
Teams of five people each will race around the parking lot of the community centre with each team pushing one of their members on a couch provided by the municipality.
The good-natured race puts the spotlight on getting couch potatoes to be more active.
Last year, a team from the Clearview Fire Department’s Station 4 in Creemore won the Great Couch Potato Race.
This year about eight teams are registered, Soczka said.
While the race is limited to municipal staff, she added outside entries will be considered.
Residents up for the challenge should get in touch with Clearview Public Library staffer Michele McKenzie at 428-3595.
Soczka said planning for the Clearview Health and Leisure Showcase started in November.
She said organizers are hoping for a strong turnout by the public.
